Hold on to what is good even if it is a handful of earth.

Hold on to what you believe even if it is a tree which stands by itself.

Hold on to what you must do even if it is a long way from here.

Hold on to life even when it is easier letting go.

Hold on to my hand even when I have gone away from you.

Paper Bag Princess - One of my favourite picture books

Dear Adele,
I imagine that you have many picture books that you adore. I know I certainly have my grand collection.

I have a beef about the princess archetype in children's literature. I do think its evolving. The princess is now more often the hero than the victim, but in many stories she still seems to need to live happily forever with a man in wealth.

Can a girl be a princess, that is to say be wonderful, feel beautiful, have the love of her family and community, but still brave adventures, fight her own battles, help those around her and find happiness even when everything isn't the rosy coloured happily ever after? I think so.
The Paper Bag Princess was the first of such stories I had ever encountered, and I think it is still pretty unique in the world. I would like to write children's books so that the young people in my life have a such amazing heroines in their vision.

Thinking of you today.
Nicole
